Maintenance Technician and Production Technician for Highland, Texas 

In 1967, a young man who worked at his family’s water delivery company decided to do something revolutionary.  With five gallon water jugs weighing in at over 50 pounds, Bill Young reasoned that plastic containers would drop that weight dramatically.  He negotiated a deal to have plastic bottles manufactured for his product, and ultimately decided to fabricate those bottles in-house.  Bill Young eventually turned his innovation into Plastipak Packaging Inc.

You may not have heard of Plastipak, but you use the products they package every day.  They employ 5,000 people worldwide, and hold more than 600 patents for their products and processes.  While they are publicly traded, Plastipak still remains a family business.

Maintenance Technician:  For this role you need strong mechanical maintenance skills and basic electrical troubleshooting abilities.  Can you test for power supply problems?  Can you fix mechanical equipment?  Are you methodical about the maintenance process and can work with little or no supervision?  Then this is the career path for you.   From here you can move up to a maintenance team lead, supervisor, manager, or plant manager.

Production Technician:  Don’t let the title fool you - this is also a technical role.  As a production technician, you are responsible for on-the-fly maintenance of the bottle making equipment in your area.  Can you fix mechanical equipment?  Are you fast on your feet?  Then this role will make good use of that skill.  From this track, you can become a production supervisor, superintendent, and eventually, a plant manager.

Shift:  The shift will rotate between six months of night shifts and six months of day shifts.  They run 12 hour shifts, so you’ll work four days on, then three days off; the following week you’ll have three days of work and four days off.

Training:  You will get four weeks of intensive training for either role, and then will be assigned to a mentor once you are out on the manufacturing floor.

Location:  Highland TX. 

This city is just north of I-10, 22 miles from downtown Houston.
